HS Conservation Science Class Brings Invasive Species Lesson to Life for 3rd Graders

Posted Date: 10/14/26 (02:51 PM)

Mr. Whipkey’s High School Conservation Science class visited 3rd grade classrooms at Todd Lane to lead a lesson about invasive species, focusing on a threat right here in Pennsylvania: the spotted lanternfly. Spotted lanternflies have spread across Pennsylvania in recent years, posing a serious threat to local trees and plants. To help younger students understand why these pests are harmful and how to stop them, the high schoolers put together an interactive, multi-part lesson plan consisting of a story they created and a video about the spotted lantern fly. The high school students also helped 3rd grade students observe lanternflies using a magnifying glass. They discussed the distinct color markings, wing patterns, and physical traits of the insect, learning exactly how to identify them in their own backyards and around the school grounds.
